Usually, I am not one to love novellas.  I have found that they can feel rushed, contrived, and forced and in the end I usually feel annoyed and let down…I feel like maybe I might have enjoyed the story had the author just taken the time to write more.  That being said, over the past year, I have found several authors who have made me begin to re-evaluate my thoughts on novellas and short stories.  These authors have shown me that perhaps it wasn’t the “novella” per say that I was disliking as much as the specific authors I was choosing  to read.  Let’s look at it this way.  There are many kinds of runners.  Some are long distance runners and some are sprinters.  While both kinds are ridiculously fast it doesn’t mean that a sprinter can run a marathon nor can a marathon runner win a 500 yard dash.  Get it?!  So while some of my favorite authors may be able to rock my world while writing a novel, for me, they kind of fizzle when it came to short stories. (Gosh…I sound so formal in this review…don’t I?)

Then one day while reading compilation of novellas (one of which was an author I loved…the other two I didn’t know), I found that I REALLY enjoyed the other two stories in the book.  I mean I REALLY REALLY loved them.  On that day I “met” author Jess Dee.  Since then I have read nine (9) Jess Dee stories of them, I have loved nine (9) Jess Dee stories.  How lucky am I?

Jess Dee is an Australian author who has an innate gift for writing erotic romance.  In each of her stories (that I’ve read), she has managed to come up with sexy characters, beautiful scenery, erotic love scenes, incredible verbiage, and stimulating situations. The woman can rock your world in one paragraph in a way it may take other authors several chapters to do so.

While some of her stories have sexual encounters between a man and a woman that border on mind blowing (heehee) some of her other stories contain ménage scenes that could shake the very foundation on which you stand.  Those scenes are beautifully choreographed and play out like a dance.   If you are like me and able to envision what you read in your head…you are in for one hell of a treat when you are reading a Jess Dee story.

Those of you who are fans of Lisa’s Reads know that I adore series and related books.  Once again, Ms. Dee doesn’t disappoint.  Living up to its name, the Fire series is a two book series which consists of “Winter Fire” and “Hidden Fire” both books were hot and steamy but definitely worth the burn!  In her Speed series, book 1 “See You in My Dreams” and “Colors of Love” are magical sexy stories of the members of the rock band Speed and their journey to finding love.  (Book 3 has not yet been released but I am waiting with bated breath for it!!!).

There are times when I want to commit to a full length novel.  I want to settle in for the long haul and give it everything I have.  Other times, I want a quicker story but I don’t want to give up the passion, pull, or pizzazz that sometimes gets lost in a novella/short story.  When I’m reading a Jess Dess story…I know I’m going to “the end” and be a very happy, very content reader.

While I have not read all of Ms. Dee’s stories, I have read the following:

“See You in My Dreams,” “Colors of Love,” Visiting Paradise,” “Office Affair,” “Winter Fire,” “Hidden Fire,” Photo Opportunity,” Island Idyll,” and “Ask Adam” not a bad one in the bunch.

I’ll get you started by putting a couple of Ms. Dee’s stories right here on my page…just click on the picture that turns you on the most (wink!!)..and get reading.

I can’t wait to hear your thoughts.

xo,

Lisa

I agree, Jess Dee is awesome. Have read many of her books and See you in My Dreams is one of my favorite books.

Wonderful tribute Lisa and so well deserved. I had read Ask Adam which I loved & picked Steve’s Story next (should have read Only Tyler first but they still worked). I would love to read what you think about Steve’s Story. It was the first book I read where a Happy Ever After was uncertain & I was impressed with Jess’s bravery to dare to write outside the box. I’ve never forgotten that book & after I read it I literally couldn’t start another book. See You In My Dreams was a gem. I have to read the next one.

Mary, the next book..Colors of Love, was truly beautiful (but definitely outside the box…so be prepared). Frankly, I think Jess Dee is a wonderful writer and not nearly as known as she should be. I’m hoping to change that for her. xo

  3. I love the multiple emotions I get from reading Jess Dee. OMG, the sexual tension and pay-off is brilliant but in so many of her stories I’ve needed the tissue box big time and that’s just added so much to the whole wonderful experience!

Couldn’t agree more Beverley! It takes a fine writer to be able to bring such emotions out of her readers in such a short period of time. I completely adore her (as you can tell!)

  4. Wow, that’s a beautiful post! If I were an author I think the best words I could ever hear would be, “Hey, Lisa’s reviewing your book this week, did you hear that?”
